Would You Date Your Male BFF?
What would it feel like to date a longtime friend for 40 days and nights? That was the challenge that two thirtyish New York City-based graphic designers, Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh, took on when they played a self-imposed dating game between March 20 and April 28, and recorded the experience. Although romance wasn’t in the cards, their audacious experiment generated a blog that triggered a storm of visual responses.
They called their experiment “Forty Days of Dating.” They agreed to a number of simple rules: 1) They would see each other every day.
Their solution to the question? Date each other for forty days. Both Jessica and Timothy have self-professed relationship issues—him with commitment issues and her with over-commitment issues—and both have found themselves single. The plan is to jump into a full-scale committed relationship, go to couples therapy, and complete a survey at the end of each of the forty days.
To me, however, it seemed like 40 Days of Dating was less like an experiment and more like a train wreck where nobody could look away. But everyone learns from mistakes—even when they seem to be made intentionally. So to say that I learned nothing from 40 Days of Dating would be a lie. Here’s what I took away from the ordeal, despite itself.

Friends first, they both thought 40 days of sincere dating might help them break some long-standing romantic habits. They agreed to a set of rules to keep the project intact, one of which was to keep daily journal entries.
Goodman prefers to date casually, sometimes seeing several women at the same time. Walsh, on the other hand, is a self-described “hopeless romantic” who jumps too quickly — her words — into relationships. But the two also have a lot in common. They both live in New York City , work as graphic designers and have been friends for the past four years.
In March, after finding themselves newly single and equally frustrated, they started dating for a day experiment, with plans to document the entire journey, day-by-day. That was then. They’ll continue updating the site until Aug. It’s the Forty Days of Dating project — and for those keeping track, it’s a captivating, borderline-addictive blog that’s approaching a climax. We’ve always been close, but it was never more than a platonic relationship.

Goodman appraises Walsh. So began 40 Days of Dating , a blog documenting each day of the experiment in thorough and visually delightful detail: videos, questionnaires, photographs and text all helped transform the mess of a relationship into beautiful order.
